2) Difference Between Yin and Yang

In Taoist philosophy, Yin Yang is the concept that the two energies present in nature come together to form a balanced whole. This philosophy is reflected in the opposites of night and day, man and woman, water and fire.

♂️ The Yang is the opposite of the Yin, it is associated among other things with:

  • Masculine
  • Light
  • Fire
  • Sun
  • Warm
  • Odd numbers

Yin and Yang are simply two opposite but complementary energies because one cannot exist without the other and a part of one is found in the opposite which creates balance.

A good example of this is day and night: In the darkness of the night there is also light (the moon and stars) and in the day there is also darkness, in the form of shadows (created by the sunlight).

3) Is Yin Good or Bad ?

Neither of them...

Yin, or Yang for that matter, are neither good nor bad, they just represent opposite natural forces.

According to the philosophy of Yin and Yang life is incredibly non-dualistic, which means that there is a little something in everything. In good there is bad and in bad there is good 👍🏻.

4) What is the Characteristic of a Yin Personality ?

Physically, Yin-type people tend to be thinner, softer and smaller, while Yang-type people tend to be more muscular, stronger and taller.

Yin-type people tend to prefer activities that do not require a lot of physical strength or an excessive amount of energy. They tend to require a calmer, less active environment. As a result, they are less prone to physical stress and tend to live longer 🙂.

In terms of personality, Yin types tend to be more passive, shy, caring, sensitive and quiet.

5) Yin Activities

Yin is known to be more feminine. It is nourishing, slow, dark, cold and strong.

Examples of Yin activities would be;

  • Yoga (Yin Yoga)
  • Sleeping
  • Sitting meditation
  • Qi Gong
  • Tai Chi
  • Stretching
  • Take a bath
  • Slow walking
  • Fishing

These activities slow down our nervous system so that the body and mind can rest. During Yin activities, our body undergoes the cellular repair necessary to stay healthy and to fight against stress 👊🏻.

A. Yin Yoga

Yin Yoga is based on the principles of Hatha Yoga in India and Taoist philosophy and practice in China. This practice seeks to develop the qualities of Yin energy: night, moon, woman, water...

🧘🏻‍♀️ It is a slow and gentle form of yoga that is associated with conscious meditation incorporated into the practice of asanas. Yin Yoga practitioners seek to nourish the silence within the self and the interconnectedness of the self with all things.

6) What Food is Considered Yin ?

In traditional Chinese medicine, each food has a terminal property: hot, cold or neutral.

However, the body can be hot, cold or balanced (neutral) and some diseases introduce heat or cold into our body. Thus, in Chinese medicine, we eat "cold" foods for an excess of heat or "hot" foods for an excess of cold.

Here is a  non-exhaustive food list hat promote the Yin (cold) aspect of the body:

  • Green tea
  • Tofu
  • Kelp and all algae
  • Goat's milk
  • Cheese
  • Yogurt
  • Sardine
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Bok Choy
  • Banana
  • Watermelon
  • Blackberries

🥦 Yin foods tend to congest the digestive organs if large amounts are consumed. It is therefore important to consume small amounts frequently rather than large amounts irregularly.

For example, a large portion of tofu late at night is not ideal because it will stay in the stomach, stagnate and not be properly digested before bedtime.

A small portion between 5 and 6 p.m. is therefore more ideal because you will have more time to digest it before bedtime.

7) What is Yin Deficiency ?

🙍 Yin deficiency can often be the result of prolonged stress levels that exceed the time we spend resting. There may also be an excess of Yang in your life. Genetics, poor eating habits, lack of sleep or chronic illness can also lead to Yin deficiency.

Symptoms of a Yin energy deficiency vary depending on the organ involved, but generally include:

  • Night sweats
  • Insomnia
  • Signs of dryness
  • Dry cough
  • Dry lips
  • Thirst
  • Red tongue tip
  • Vivid dreams or nightmares
  • Dry nails, hair
  • Irritability
  • Unstable and unable to relax
  • Frustration
  • Anger

8) How to Get Yin Energy ?

If you feel a Yin deficiency you should avoid these foods;

  • Alcohol
  • Caffeine
  • Sweet drink
  • Spices
  • Peppers
  • Eat large meals

and refocus on the following 4 points to regain Yin energy ⚡:

  1. Work hard, rest hard. It is important that you give your body and mind enough rest and downtime for the amount of activity you do.
  2. Feed yourself daily with clean, wholesome foods. Make sure your body has enough fuel at all times by eating regularly. Protein contributes to the formation of Yin.
  3. Spend time in nature without technology. Find a park nearby and enjoy the natural beauty that surrounds you without your smartphone.
  4. Give your mind a break. Our mind is constantly at work, thinking about the future and dwelling on the past, without even realizing it. Teach your mind to get off the hamster wheel by practicing yoga, meditation, tai chi, qi gong, or spending a few moments in silence.
